The Wild Willy is based on the military Willy from the manufacturer Overland (the predecessor to Jeep Corporation). the Willy was borne as a military jeep for the US Army that in 1939 needed something to replace what they had at that time (tings like modified T-Models (!) and such) Eventually Overland won the deal in competition with Ford and Bantam, and more or less ever since, we have had the Willy's.

And just as a curiosity, did you know that the Willy's was the US Army's predecessor to the XR311 ?
