The Tamiya Lotus 79 is a replica of the famous Lotus 79 raced by Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson in the 1978 F1 Championship. The Lotus 79 was the first F1 car to take full advantage of ground effects aerodynamics, pioneered in its immediate predecessor, the Lotus 78. The 79 was driven by Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson in the 1978 season. Ronnie Peterson sadly died crashing a spare Lotus 78 at the Italian GP late in the 1978 season. The 79 was also the first F1 car to be designed using wind tunnel and computer design aids. The 79 proved to be almost unbeatable during the 1978 Formula One season and provided an unprecedented level of domination. The car took six more victories during the season giving the drivers' championship to Andretti, and the constructors' championship to Lotus. The Lotus 79 is by many still considered as one of the most successful F1 designs, ever.
