In true Tamiya style, the Countach LP500S is of course based on a true Lamborghini, but not the one you might think... The problem with the Tamiya LP500S is that Lamborghini did not make them until 1982, and the Tamiya kit no 58005 was issued in 1979... Also the LP500S does not have the lowered section in the roof, but the LP400S has... That lead me to believe that Tamiya actually made a typing error on the model number... But, it is not as easy as Tamiya making a typo. Tamiya actually based this model on a special made Countach, which was called LP 500S already in 1979. Years before the official LP500S was released. The story behind this very model (and car) is made by Walter Wolf, a wealthy Canadian businessman. Wolf purchased an LP400 in 1975; however, he was not satisfied with the LP400's engine and asked the chief engineer of Lamborghini to create a special high-power version of Countach. The Wolf version of the LP400S also featured the upgraded wheels like on the model, Pirelli P7 tires, large fender flares, and front and rear spoilers of the LP400S model. It was painted in red, with black fender flares, as the 58005 model and was designated 'LP500S' like the standard Countach model from the 1980s. The first three pictures show the unique Countach that Tamiya used as inspiration. Note the correct decals below the head lights. The last picture however, is a production LP500S (also called LP5000S) They were made from 1982 onwards, and as you can see, the roof section has changed (among other things)
