Hi there, definitely contributing to this thread.! Yesterday i stumbled across a "Tamiya Super Champ Mechanical Speed Controller" whilst browsing Ebay. Part number 58034. I think this is the dual pack Johnny was referring to. I was very intrigued by this, how exactly does it work, it looks to be adjustable, similar to hi-point or "EPA" adjustments perhaps. So that was me set, better half of the day spent reading deeper into MSC's. I would absolutely have to get my hands on a 58034. I left the office determined to dig out a touring car kit supplied MSC. Turns out i have three of the basic 3 step's that were included in earlier TL-01 and TA-04 kits. This then led me to picking out a rough old TL-01(guinea pig) chassis from my "I'll get to them one day" box. 4-5hours later and my little test had escalated beyond my initial plans. I had stripped it down, scrubbed clean all the plastics, fresh diffs, added bearings, shimmed to death, rebuilt "restored" to its original kit form. I will be wiring in the MSC after work today, feeling unnecessarily excited about the whole endeavor. I hear you, hopeless by todays standards, but the joy involved in making something hopeless function as if it were the only option, that is worth a great deal. Bluegoodness

This would be the first time i have re-introduced a MSC to anything. I would be interested to see the older esc's. Maybe some side by side comparison with current small form factor esc's. I somehow never felt the need until two days ago, maybe it was brought on by being back in the office after the long break. Or just a random urge brought on by you guys. I completed the TL-01 rebuild with original MSC after work yesterday, excited to give it a go before the light went away. No surprises, 3-step MSC's are horrid, in the best possible way. I ran through a 2100 NiMh pack(revived the night before to make the MSC test as authentic as possible). Equal amounts of enjoyment and disappointment were felt, slow is too fast, brakes aren't a thing, far too unpredictable in a small space, but great fun. Will definitely get it out again over the weekend. I may even put another MSC in a TA-04S chassis next, after i came across a parts sprue with the bits needed to mount it all. That is all for now. And remember to never to run the first steps more than 10 sec or so.
That is what kills the resistors. If doing slow walks, burst full speed now and then to override the resistor (full speed is full power that does not use the resistor) I have never killed any MSC resistors in my 35 year in the hobby. Mainly I'm a flat out guy And up to 2003 ish, I had never touched any ESC at all. I used to drive a lot. |

That makes a lot of sense. I race slot cars as well, slow rolling heats the VR up ALOT. That resistor has to work extra hard to minimize the voltage to the motor.
I eventually got round to taking some pictures. Nowhere near as pro looking as Blakbird’s pictures. I will be building a white box soon. The car was a market place save a few years back. I bought it for the box with intention of finding a clean TL-01. Turns out this TL-01 wasn’t quite as terrible as I thought. It cleaned up well. The front of the body has seen better days, the rest of it is alright. I’d like to trim all the clear off the stickers, I will save that for a rainy day. EDIT: I think this reply would be better suited for showroom, if so mods please adjust. Bluegoodness
