Hi,

Started my vintage Blackfoot restoration. Disassembled it yesterday and left everything to soak over night. This morning I've finished off degreasing the gearbox components and a few other parts (That stuff is nightmare to remove).
Then cleaning and polishing the plastics.
Everything is now individually bagged up and ready for reassembly when a couple of spares arrive next week.

This is definitely going to be a light runner when the better weather arrives and I only plan to use a 540 silver can as its power plant, as I've read the gearboxes are easily stressed on this model.
With that in mind, can I use Copper grease during my reassembly or should I get the recommended Tamiya product? It's just that I have a new tub of Copper grease immediately available for use.

And just out of interest (It's far too expensive for serious consideration) does the MIP ball diff kit act as a direct replacement in vintage models?

Also, are ultrasonic cleaners an improvement over conventional methods for removing grease and dirt?

Thanks.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem mate :)

Very nice job. The trans is very fragile but with the 540 and soft runs, you should be quite. Copper grease can be used easily. It could be sometimes some matters with ally parts electrochimics transformation. If you can find classic multipurpose grease like molycote, it is enough. IMO only. ;)

Thank you AI, Andy and Stingray, I really appreciate your feedback.

AI, i've just taken some pictures of body for you to view. I haven't touched it yet, as there is some considerable work to be done as you'll see from the photos.

Thank you Andy for helping me with publishing pictures. I'm useless with that type of thing.

Stingray, thank you for your advice and clarification on Copper grease. Greatly appreciated.

Wow !!! That’s some break on the Ranger shell Sam.
But I’m sure you can fix that.

Nice work.

Thanks AI. It's definitely going to be a challenge, as I'd preferably like to retain the original decals after repair and respray.

Ideally I didn't want to touch the paint work, as I'm an obsessive purist when it comes to keeping things vintage.. lol. However, it's going to be difficult to repair the body without some disruption to the original paint.

I'll have a better idea of what can be done once it's all cleaned up.

The Blackfoot electronics were filthy so I spent a couple of hours disassembling a few bits and pieces and cleaning everything.
