WHEELS - mix & match 3 years 4 months ago #62777

Mixing and matching stuff can sometimes be alot of fun, especially when it comes to style and looks on cars. I recently bought these wheels on ebay, I wasn't certain if I would use them but something told me that maybe these would go well with an older classic model, like my 240Z.

These rims work best with slicks, generally tires of lower profile, which means not rally or any beefier terrain tires, due to the rim's extended 'tire profile' to give the appearance of more massive tire on a smaller rim size. Wheels like this I'd imagine are used on cars from the 60s and 70s, mostly asphalt or some flat track, like the older forumla-1. I'm sure Jonny will have something to add here ;)

In my case I bought two sets of rims, both types are similar looking, same color but slightly different spoke amount and with different offset. Note that the rear rim has a greater offset than the front, which allows for that typical 60-70s look. Also in this case the suspension travel of the TT01 chassi needs drastically limiting to keep the wheels just away from the arches. I suspect this would make a good drift-car, however my aim is a kind of gravel racer like the early Pikes Peak enthusiasts in the 70s. And as always... I can't decide on the body color.

So the front rims used are these www.ebay.com/it...:MEBIDX:IT

And rear rims are here www.ebay.com/it...2749.l2649

Needs to be added that the front rims offset is 6 mm, and rear rims have offset 9mm.

Of course, if only to show I'm paying attention ;) XF-85 Rubber Black will take the shine of the fake sidewalls :)

I used similar wheels on my CC01 RV as modern low profile combinations just don't look right to me, ditto modifying stock and aftermarkey wheels for my scale Minis :)

The stock Tamiya "Rally" paint scheme (red w/ satin black hood) is a pretty good match to what you're thinking, but I remember the 70s being very orange and brown, so PS13 Gold, PS14 Copper, PS19 Camel Yellow, PS52 Champagne Gold, PS56 Mustard Yellow (possibly my favourite of this list) and PS61 Metallic Orange are all good candidates IMO :)

Metallic snot green is another very 70s colour, probably best forgotten but the 240Z is a good looking car, so could probably pull it off.

The 1:12 static kit 240Z that appeared in the catalogues for a long time was a deep, glossy brown - but unfortunately there's nothing like that in PS paints :(

Thanks Jonny. Yes, perhaps something red. I was also thinking blue or black metallic to go with those gold rims.

The sidewalls on the rims I hope will fade some with dust and such after a while driving.

The front looks like Ford 4 spoke RS wheels.
Typical found on Escort MK1-2, Capri, Fiesta etc..
But I bet they are ment to look like takechi project hart wheels, these are a bit narrower spoke at the end and they swing a bit into the ring that the spokes meets.

The rear seems to look like SSR JDM wheels, these in real life are 8 spoke.
But both look plenty of old school to me :y:

Finding correct wheels and tires are hard both in rc and real world.
Like for my real Capri, which I bought some BBS lookalike wheels for back in 2012,' now I'm not that sure if they fit my style or the time as those are satin black.
Time will tell I'll guess.
