Comical Grasshopper 5 years 4 months ago #52999

I got the Comical Grasshopper I pre-ordered in late September today. At the same time I ordered 2 Baja Champ parts trees, BC CVD axles and a Tamiya 3mm rod set so I can give the Grasshopper a Wide Willy conversion, other than that and bearings, it'll be a stock build. I'll try to find time to start building in the next few days.

First things first. Page 17-18, replacement of plastic and bronze bushings.

Steps 1-4 are attaching control arms, upper links, wheelie bar, c-hubs and axles. I'm replacing the stock arms, links and axles with bits from the Baja Champ parts tree C and aftermarket CVD's to give a little more stability.

Time to sleep. I'll try and get up a little early for work and get a couple more steps done.

I'm looking forward to see the wide version of a Comical Grasshopper.
Going to use the stock wheels/tyres?

Larbut, I'll be using the stock wheels and tyres, at least for now.

Steps 5-7 are dealing with the steering servo, tie rods and front chassis halves. There's a typo in step 6. It calls for part L14 for the servo mounts, but there's no L tree . The mounts are on the N tree.
I'm swapping parts BB9 for the threaded shafts in the Tamiya 3mm shaft set. They need shortened by 2cm to make them work.

Steps 8-11 are installing the control arms, upper links and hubs. Again I'm going with arms and links from the Baja Champ.

Next up is shocks. I'll start them when I get home from work.

Steps 12-15 are the shocks. Their oil filled but nothing special other than being molded in white.

Steps 16-20 are attaching the gearbox to the front chassis half, body and tail light mounts, nerf bars and electronics.

Next episode will start with wheels and tyres.

Been working on mine as well.
Stock build sofar except for some slight hopups, bearings, stainless shafts with c clips, adjustable upper arms and on the rear the ww2 wheel axles and alloy hexes.

Kit has a stock Silvercan not the torque tuned so may go for a sports tuned.

I tested the rear tires on vintage Willy rims they are slightly to big and won't fit, such a disappointment.
