The year was 1985, I'd just finished my O level exams at school and my parents were awesome and bought me a Hotshot to celebrate.

Leap forward in time to 2021 and that very same Hotshot is coming down off the shelf for a complete rebuild.
Lets just say it's a bit dusty and a bit dirty.

This is the only rc car I kept from this time.
I even dabbled with some up grades. I ballraced the whole thing, which was expensive at the time. For some reason, there's still one brass bearing in a gear box.

I even remember at the time buying an independent shock option for the back and an frp chassis. I've still got both, so I'll post pics at some point. But apart from the Demon motor I must have returned it all to stock set up.

Dusty !!! I never fitted the drivers head because I put the receiver in the space where his head should have gone.
I put an ESC in it pretty much straight away.
And those things were a bit bigger than they are today.

Because this is all the space you had to fit the radio gear into.

Demon motor, which went with my Demon ESC.

Let the tear down and clean up begin.

Starting to take it apart.
And one of the bearings, looking good for its age.

Everything separated out.
I thought it was going too well, but a couple of screws on the front arms won't come out because they have been worn down when being run.

Clean up started.

Not great pictures, but these are the 3 screws that need to come out. One the head is trashed. The two small ones have just been worn down enough that the head doesn't have enough to get a screw driver into.

Any advice would be gratefully received.
I don't want to damage the black plastic arms because when Tamiya re-released these they changed the design.

Cheers.

Cool project, even cooler it's your old car.

HotShot is one of the vehicles I never got, but it's on my wish list

Thanks Richard, this is going to be an interesting build. Where I normally like to get as close to original as possible, with this one I feel it needs to keep some of history.
I don't really want to replace anything if possible expect for any duff screws.

IIRC the CSK M3 screw is aluminium? If so, it should be soft enough to drill off the head, at least you've got a centre in the remains of the cross.

The cheese head ones on the ends, is there anything sticking out on the underside you could cut a slot in & drive out backwards?  (edit - I realised very quickly that wouldn't work :( )

I can't see that drilling out M2 screws is really an option. Is sacrificing the ball plates a possibility? The design of them never changed AFAIK.

I think I'd try the CSK screw & think on about the M2s...

:)

ETA - razor saw across the M2 heads to cut a new slot?

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem mate :)

Thanks guys.
Jonny, I'll look at replacement parts for anything that will have to drilled out. Nice idea on cutting a new slot. I haven't got a razor saw, so I'll invest in one.

In the meantime there's plenty to clean up.
Gears and bearings have been in engine degreaser.
I will sort out the screws and start tidying up any other metal parts.
Thanks again for reading and any input, it's always appreciated.

After looking at the photos I'd posted, I thought I could see enough on the two small screws to get some purchase. Success !!
That just leaves the flat headed M3.

At least that's 2 less things to worry about.
