I’ve attached the front gear box and installed the drive shaft.

Next up the mono shocks. These seemed pretty revolutionary at the time and they also look cool.

Now the interesting bit. The radio box. This is a very compact space.
Up first I’ve fitted the steering servo. It’s a Futaba S3003 which is what I had in the original car.
If I have a dig around I could actually dig out the original servo that was in the car. I’ll maybe look at doing that.
And now something I completely over looked at the start, but has now become clear.
Back in ‘85 I cut the back end off the mechanism box. The only reason I can think of was to fit an ESC. I’ve still got the ESC I bought at the time, so I’ll be digging that out as well to check this theory out.
In the kit you get a metal pin that attaches to the battery door, which I imagine was to stop the battery sliding backwards and forwards.
When I took the car apart I realised the metal pin was missing. Luckily I still have it in a spares box. But I’m assuming that the ESC stuck out of the mechanism box and probably stopped the battery moving as well. I’ll try to reverse engineer this and see if that’s the case.

So I dug out my original ESC that I bought in the ‘80’s to make my Hotshot cutting edge ?
I’ve got an even earlier example of an ESC which it like a brick.

And this picture explains why I cut out the back of the mechanism box.
It’s almost quite neat how the end of the ESC fills in where I cut out the plastic end wall.
This doesn’t explain why I took the pin off the battery door. I still have all my original batteries, so I’ll be checking how they fit. I don’t intend to use the batteries because I very much doubt they would hold a charge.

Just for reference, here’s a Tamiya ESC next to my Demon one.

I’ve almost got the chassis together now.
But I saw this part in one of the plastic tubs from the tear down.
I remember taking it off the car, but it’s not in the manual.

So I had to look back through my photos at the start. This is an after market part that is fitted to the front gear box to the trailing arms. Without it there’s a lot of movement. But with this fitted it tightens every thing up. The steering would be very messy without this.
I’d be interested if the re-re is any better or whether this is just a design issue.

I did a bit of digging tonight and found the part I have on the front of my Hotshot was made by CRP. On Shapeways you can get a repro of the part, so it must be still relevant.
I also have 4 plastic shims that came with this.
So I guess it’s to help take out play on the trailing arms.
I’m glad I found out who made it.

I finally got the last worn screw screw out.

In the end I got it out by putting it in some boiling water for less than a minute.
I was hoping the heat would affect either the aluminium screw or the metal piece it’s screwed into.
Any way a bit of heat a large Philips screw driver and out it came.
That’s a relief because I can now finish putting the chassis together properly.

I’m not keen on those aluminium screws, they just seem too soft.
These aren’t going to be removed very often, but they just don’t seem like they will last.
I’m replacing all 4 of these. Even brand new ones don’t fill me with much enthusiasm.

Good to see you got it out :y:

I can't say I've measured them, but my guess is they're a flatter angle than standard countersink screws to spread the load better (and used in aerospace for the same reason), and they were only available (or cheaper) in aluminium. From memory the aluminium tubbed RC10s used aerospace angle countersink screws on the underside (but in 4-40 UNC or similar), the re-re gold tube certainly did.

Cheers Jonny.
I very much doubt I’ll be driving this as much as I did when I got it in ‘85.
So hopefully those new screws will see it out.

Probably a final update for a little while.
There are a couple of bits and pieces I could do, but I’m putting this to one side for now.

I want to paint the driver figure so I can’t attach the roll cage.
Wheels, I need to clean up further and try the peroxide treatment to whiten them.
Tyres, I will buy new ones for this. I just think it makes a big difference.
Body, I need to strip the old paint and repaint, but I will be keeping the original stickers so I need to protect these.

I’ve enjoyed giving the car a well deserved rebuild.
I can’t wait to see it finished, hopefully this summer.
Thanks for all the tips and advice along the way as ever it’s always appreciated.
