Richard's Marui Big Bear resto projects. 3 years 2 months ago #64567

I'm waiting one these from a mate of mine, both of them I got for £70 including shipping and they are mostly complete, one is missing the gearbox, but it might be in the box of miscellaneous parts.
I do know one of them are missing the gears after running a too hot motor.
I think I got them pretty cheap, even they need a good amount of work.

And from before I got this one. Seems like I building a Big Bear collection now

Between these I hope I should be able to build a shelfer and one runner.
Never had a Marui or a Big Bear, but I have actually driven the last one in the 90s when my mate owned it.
That mate also had a Marui Ninja. I still got wheels and bald tires and the wing from that one.
And the Ninja must be one of the top looking buggies out there, they are getting real rare now.

Nice, Yes I think that was a great price for 2  Especially with tyres that don't look completely rotten ;)
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem mate :)

That's what I thought.
Have heard dry rotten tires are a big problem on these.
And the wheel and tires was one of the reason I bough these as the one I already have do miss both wheels and tires.

I could have actually got them cheaper as he was asking between 500-1000nok for these (500Nok = £43ish ), but since he is my mate I did not want to low ball him.
And he was happy about the deal, so was I. He even offered to split the shipping as he is living 3 hours away from me.

Found a rc channel on YT today which features a lot of Big Bear's, and he did mentioned dry rotten tires are a big problem on these.

A parma 34'??? Crossed fingers. I had one on my marui tbird but was destroyed when I attempt to remove the paint with oven cleaner.

As posted in the mail thread, I got two Marui Big Bear projects earlier this week.
Got them really cheap at £70 incl shipping and on top of that a brand new Parma 34' body.
I'm really happy with that deal.

The one to the right is missing the gearbox and my friend told me one is missing the gears due a too hot motor for the drivetrain.
I guess the one with geatbox present is missing the gears, but I won't know before I open it up.

And I can't belive how soft those tires are!!!
No cracks as I can see, a bit dry at some spots, but only on the surface.
Those tires deffo needs to be off the graound during storage to preserve them.

The box with parts incldes the interior for the blue body.

And both front body mount brackets are still in one piece, which is a bit uncommon as these usually breaks at some point.
So I do need one gearbox, I have that on that one I have from before, but that also needs new gears, so I need 2 sets of gears, maybe 3 and some other bits like front bumper as I think I only got one.

All in all I'm very happy

Today I pulled apart the chassis from the black one as that is the most complete one.
Gears was measured last week, so since the gearbox was already half dissambled it would take no time to pull the chassis apart.

Here after a scrub and bath.
It was covered in light mud (seen in previous pictures) so it needed a good clean.
Hard to reach places was done with some q-tips, still have a few places to do.

Tub is mostly stock, minus a couple of hacks and damage after something has melted.

Hack number 1: Cut out for battery wires.

The receiver pack has melted at some point.
A hole for a M4 bolt has been made in front of that area, why I don't know.

From the bottom of the rx pack area.

Hack number 2.3 and 4 can be seen here.
Closest camera, two M4 sized holes that has held something.
Number 3 is the angled support wall in the middle that has been cut away, I think it is due clearance for the pan head M4 that was located there.
And lastly number 4 is a hole above that angled suppurt wall.

With exception of the hacks and the melting damage, it seems this had very little use.
The bottom of chassis is very good!

Now the question is, should I repair those hacks and the melt damage and paint it?
Or make it a good suvivor?
If I go ahead and repair it,what color is the chassis? To me it looks like a cross between gray and brown.
Light sand color?

The gearbox sounded rough and I know I have V1 diff with the two small gears.
Can't see damage to the idler gear, so maybe that is from a V2?
Does someone know the difference between V1 and V2 idler gears?

My second chassis is missing the rear axle altogether, so I need one of those.
Those are the same as the other Wheelie trucks from Marui?
