Having used the Lexan body out of my CC-01 Unimog 425 kit, I did some thinking about what I might like to build on the bare chassis.

The next few posts are going to be quite wordy – but are so much shorter and more focussed than the unexpurgated version. Still, if it’s too much: 

TL;DR: I’d like to build a 1970s Dustcart & have already stretched a CC-01 chassis :) 


I’ve been researching what are “correctly” known in the UK as RCVs – Refuse Collecting Vehicles – but are known to me, something of a misnomer (or at least anachronistically as “Dust Carts” and sometimes “Bin Lorries”. “Refuse Collectors”, “Refuse Trucks”, “Garbage Wagons” or “Bennes a Ordures” (and many other variations, depending on where you are and what time period you’re talking about) are equally valid. 


One of these would fit a lot of my usual scratch build criteria: 

1 – could be of angular design from the 1970s;

2 – small/medium scale diecast versions to work from exist;

3 – can legitimately be painted orange

4 – could (though not necessarily, should) be built on a CC-01 chassis  

I’ve also collected a handful of books on the subject, and a small number of vintage diecast models.      My “collection” of vintage model Dust Carts is limited to just a few UK diecast brands, and to those that are scale models of what would have been seen on postwar British roads up to the early 1980s. That’s quite a lot of limitations, but even so it’s quite illustrative of a significant period of RCV evolution, and, to a certain extent, society as a whole.

In rough chronological order: 

Dinky 25V / 252 Bedford Refuse Wagon.

Claimed 1:48 scale, 107mm long. Diecast cab/overchassis, collector body and rear door, pressed steel side doors and underchassis.

“Fawn” colour cab & body and “lime green” doors, some also have “glass”. Number 25V from 1948 to 1953, 252 from 1954 to 1964. Later versions are in different colourway, typically Orange / Silver. All models have crank operated tipping action, sliding top side doors (which are bizarrely difficult to close but fly open with just a small change in angle) and swinging rear door. 

Side loading collector body with sliding top hatches, tipping function and swinging rear door. Bedford cab looks to be of pre-WWII design, possibly the 1939-52 MS?. The shape and door arrangement of this type of collector body are known as a “Chelsea”, after the borough that first introduced them. 

This model illustrates the switch to motorised vehicles (from horse drawn), that sanitation had improved (the dustcart smelled more than the streets, so had to be enclosed), and how much development in municipal vehicles was stunted by WWII.  




French Dinky 25V Ford Benne a Ordures (“garbage dumpster”).

C. 1:50 scale? 110mm long. Diecast cab/overchassis, collector body and rear door, pressed steel partial underchassis & sliding doors. Still has a crank operated (but rack & pinion operated) tipping mechanism, but otherwise very different from the UK version with more detail, all green livery, flatter fronted Ford cab, and load covers that slide fore and aft.

Original French issue was 1950-1955, mine is a modern Mattel / Atlas Reproductions version, made in China at 1/10th the price of a real one. Atlas also make a production version (25VS) of the French Dinky Studebaker cabbed prototype. 

This one illustrates that the French Dinky factory thought they could make a better diecast dustcart than the UK factory – and they were right.  :y:





Lesney Moko Matchbox 38 Karrier Refuse Collector.

1957, 1:87 (HO) scale but would pass for 1:76 OO, 62mm long. Based on the 1954 on Karrier Bantam (F Series?) side loading collector. Small scale means few details – doors don’t slide or open, no tipping action. Grey, Silver and Grey Brown varieties. 

Nb “Moko” was an early partner in the Lesney “Matchbox” series, it was founded by Moses Kohnstam - grandfather of Richard Kohnstam, the name behind the RiKo label seen on vintage UK Tamiya kit boxes.  

Comments as for the UK 25V. 





Lesney Matchbox 15 Tippax Collector.

1963, 1:64 scale but would pass for 1:72 or even OO (1:76). 65mm long. Based on the 1958 Dennis Tippax fore & aft tipper (which uses gravity for some compression). Model tips rearward for unloading. Note the opening rear section with a “Paladin” size bin hole in it. All appear to be Blue/ Grey-White and are usually dreadfully chipped. 

The 1:1 version tipped from the front end (to unload bins and use gravity to slightly compress waste) and from the rear to unload.

“Paladin” bins were large (500 to 720L?), round, typically commercial or communal wheeled bin. Initially used by the manufacturer (Pagefields) for their whole system of collection – trucks, hydraulic lifter, the bins themselves – but later the bin became a standard a lot of manufacturers could handle. Now largely supplanted by lower, more rectangular plastic equivalents. 

Also note the crew cab – more refuse means more bins, therefore more people to handle them.

Dinky 978 Refuse Wagon.

1978, 1:50* scale, 152mm long. Diecast cab, chassis and lift mechanism, plastic collector body. Based on c.1965 Bedford TK (1960 to 1992) cab & chassis with Shelvoke & Dewry Fore and Aft Tipper body (1951 to late 1960s?). Available c1975 - 1980 in that box & those colours. Earlier model (1964 on, possibly up to 1972) had a box with handrawn artwork, truck cab in a more normal (and metallic) green, white tipper body & red wheels. 

* Most sources say this model is 1:43 scale, but that would make it the same scale as the Dinky 449 (1971 to 1977) and 451 (1977 to 1979) Johnston Street Sweeper (with a Ford D series cab, 1965 on), which is blatantly a different, larger, scale.  

As with the Tippax, the collection body on the 1:1 version tipped fore and aft to compress and unload respectively, increasing volumes of refuse (a lot from the rise of supermarket food) but later models had a large internal “Powerpress” compression plate to help compact the load even more.










Matchbox King Size NoK7 Refuse Truck.

1967-73, 1:64 scale, 115mm long. Based on the 1960s Shelvoke & Dewry T-series chassis with an SD “Pa­kamatic” tipper body, c.1965. 

A slightly Later version of the model has a raised area on the forward part of tipper body, what was a printed “Cleansing Service” text becomes a sticker & moves there. 


The Pakamatic collector only tipped from the rear (to unload) and had a moving pressure plate pushing refuse forward after it was loaded from the rear to increase payload by greater compression – and a bigger body.     






Matchbox SuperKings K7 Refuse Truck.

C. 1979? As above but blue cab/orange collector body, wheels change to integral untreaded tyres, underchassis changes, and the weird cone on the grille allows you to insert a screwdriver to operate the tipping mechanism.

Nb There’s also a Matchbox Superkings K111 Refuse Truck from 1979. Although it appears to have “Colectomatic” body on it (a version of which was built in the UK) but it’s on a 6-wheeler chassis with a Peterbilt type 00.cab, a 1:1 version just wouldn’t have been seen on British roads at the time.

Matchbox 7c Refuse Truck.

1966/67, claimed 1:85 scale. 74mm long. Diecast cab/overchassis, grille/underchassis and collector mechanism, plastic collector body. Ford D-series cab, so it’s probably an Eagle (later Dennis-Eagle) “Crushload”, c. 1966





Budgie Refuse Truck no.274.

Ford Thames Trader (1957 to 1965) type cab is a bit old fashioned for the tipping (and “modern” hydraulic compression/processing) collector body. Model c. 1966. c. 1:64 scale, 110mm long.  Model is a heavyweight build with tipping action, and an opening rear loading flap. Two of the pivot points have failed on my example & have been replaced with M2 screws.  




Budgie Beford Refuse Truck no.24.

Bedford TK cab (1960 to 80s). Model c. 1966. c. HO (1:87) scale, 60mm long. Collector tips up, opening rear swing door (missing on mine). It’s the collection body that’s anachronistic on this one – but trucks with this type of body continued to be bought and used for more rural routes long after the technology had been supplanted. It might be a bit fanciful this late though, and I suspect the cab and collector are a mismatched in terms of scale.





Husky / Corgi Juniors 25 S&D Refuse Van.

1970, claimed 1:64 scale but would pass for smaller, 68.5mm long. Based on the 1960s Shelvoke & Dewry T-series chassis with the “Pa­kamatic” tipper body. Diecast cab/chassis, chrome plastic underside & body. Originally Husky branded, rebranded Corgi Juniors in 1970. “Transitional” models have a Corgi Juniors sticker over a flattened area on the underside, later models have the area recut.

This brand felt pretty cheap when new, and really haven’t aged well.

Corgi 1116 Revopak Refuse Collector

1979 to 1981, scale c 1:50, 148mm long. Typically in orange/silver & made in Great Britain. Based on 1971/72 Shelvoke & Dewry “N” type chassis (likely the NX or NY), a version of the “W” type cab, and the “Revopak” collector. 

Later versions (#59603) made in China, like the red/white/silver one in the background (c.1996?). Also available in all orange, and an all-white “Biffa” livery.  

This model illustrates how RCV payloads had got so large (up to 22 tons in this case) that tipping the body had become unsafe, with many earlier models falling over on the soft, unstable ground found at landfill sites. Push ejection replaced tipping – an angled plate at the front pushing the load out. 

“Revopak” means “revolving Pakamatic” – a rotating rake forced waste through fixed tines to shred and compact it, up to a 4:1 ratio was claimed. This was probably the peak compression achieved on RCVs – but was also the peak of danger for the operators.

Matchbox Superfast 36 Refuse Truck.

1979, claimed 1:86 scale, 77mm long. Diecast cab/overchassis & grille/underchassis, plastic collector body, mechanism and pusher. Tabs on the side move the inclined plate pusher rearwards, which in turn opens the rear. Diecast chassis & cab, but a plastic collector body. Opening rear section & sliding ejector.

Based on the Seddon-Atkinson “Colectomatic”, which was built in the UK by the Jack Allen Group using Seddon-Atkinson chassis & cab with a US-designed Heil Colectomatic mk.V body. Early models say ENGLAND on the base & are typically Red/Yellow with or Blue/Orange with silver chassis, some have small logo stickers.

Later models were made in China but still have the same year and marking. They are typically Orange/Silver or Blue/White with a Black chassis, or Green/Yellow with a Silver chassis. Some have screen printed logos on the collection body. 

This model is representative of a move to squarer looking cabs, and that buyouts and mergers was also involving overseas companies. 






Corgi Juniors J13 Refuse Truck

(c.1984). Tipper style collector body with blocky crew cab. c. 1:72 scale?, 71 mm long. Cast in “CJ” logo on the engine cover, 1960s type collector in plastic, but the diecast crew cab (& chassis) being more what sci-fi artists, propmakers & so on thought the “future” (2000 AD, or Space 1999) would look like suggest it’s not based on any 1:1 design. Orange/grey, later in other colours including red/grey.

Notes on Shelvoke & Drewry 

Note how often the manufacturer Shelvoke & Drewry appears above - from 1922 to the 1990s they were based in the nearby Letchworth Garden City, or “Litchwoof” if you’re local ;)

Of the Dust Cart models I have, I would only consider the Revopack to be of “my era”, so that’s the one I’d want to build.

There’s also a French connection - S&D had a long association with SEMAT (Societe d'Equipement Manutention et Transports, ou “Handling and Transport Equipment Company” en anglaise ;) ).

The N Type Revopak, although having a different cab and an externally different body, the rotating rake compaction and inclined plane push ejection elements all came from the slightly earlier SEMAT Benne Ray “Superpac”.  

The 1978 S&D “Maxipak” would be another contender: compared to the Revopak, the new cab is shorter and much more angular (including the mudguards), looking much more like a “modern” flat fronted Euro HGV. The body of the collector is substantially the same as the Revopak, but the processing/lifting end is different externally with substantial ribbing, and in internal mechanism.  

To complete the history of S&D, it was bought by US company Dempster (where the name “dumpster” comes from) in 1983, becoming Shelvoke-Dempster and adding some of the US parent company’s designs – including 3-axle chassis and front lifters. The UK site closed in 1991. 




Notes on Other “Toy” Dustcarts I found on eBay & the like:  

Motor Max Public Service Series 76021 Refuse Truck. 1:50 scale, c 15cm long. C. 2015? No longer in production, but the brand is still current. This Hong Kong based maker only came to my attention as a UK seller had one of these listed as a Shelvoke – I really don’t think it is, it looks very Dennis-y to me, the collector body looks like a 1980 Hestair Dennis* Phoenix”, though the notched side windows don’t quite match. 

* as the company was known at the time, previously just “Dennis”, currently “Dennis Eagle” – but their dustcarts and fire engines all had/have “Dennis” on the front in the same font…) 

Majorette: Mercedes Ville de Paris (256) & 6-wheeler chassis – both too modern 

Playart: 1970s generic 

Playmobil Refuse/Recycling Truck(s). Multiple versions 1970s(?) on, but even the oldest (3780?) included wheelie bins and was very stumpy and generic looking, and fully plastic. 

Siku: modern (Scania?) 6 wheeler 

Tonka (modern) Refuse Truck (very plastic)

Tonka (vintage) Refuse Truck (two types – one is very American tipper looking, long nose cab etc, the other barely passes as being a toy version of something you might have seen on European Roads).

Triang Minic Dustcart. This I think is the only omission in my little collection, but being a prewar tinplate model is really outside my scope. Clockwork, 1937 on. Both versions have a 3-door sideloader type collector body, one has a generic pre-war long nose/swoopy mudguards cab, the other has a sloping forward control cab. 

Wiki “Kuka” 1:87 – very modern, very plastic

Choice of Scale/Wheelbase 

Going purely off the OD of the model tyres 19mm to the wheels & tyres I’d probably use (as first seen on the Tamiya Hummer) - 88mm – the scale is 4.6:1, which is absurd.  

The Corgi model has wheelbase of 79mm, and the claimed model scale is 1:50 - so that means a 1:1 wheelbase of 3950 mm (just under 13 feet).

As I really want to aim for 1:12 scale (to match my scaled up Matchbox Bedford TM Skip Truck), this would mean a wheelbase of 329mm – 62mm longer than the LWB version of the CC-01 chassis. That is somewhat problematic, the “best” looking fudge out of all the ones I tried mocking up digitally would mean losing a section out of the collector, and effectively moving the rear wheels forwards. I did that sort of workaround the best part of ten years ago on my CC-01 RV, I really think I should be aspiring to do better now.
