Unusually for what you might think of as possibly the most “scale” RC vehicle, Tamiya were coy on what the real-world inspiration was, stating just that “Mammoth Dump Truck vehicles are used for large scale projects such as the construction of a dam. Their disassembled bodies are transported to the site and re-assembled there” on the cover of the manual. However, based on the shade of yellow, details such as the angled ribs on the bed sides, the pairs of air intakes (sometimes mis-painted as headlamps on the 1:20 RC model), vertical front ladders, and the medium size/payload (“only” 830,000 lbs), it most closely resembles the version of the Dresser Haulpak (formerly WABCO, later Komatsu) 830E built between 1984 and 1990. While the wheelbase of the Juggernaut II chassis used on the model is close to 1:20 scale, the bodywork is too narrow, not tall enough, and very, very short – overall it’s much closer to 1:32 scale.
