Making a start on a clean and rebuild on a CC01 Unimog.
Chassis tube cleaned up ok. A rather strange dollop of glue, front spur gear area. Front diff stripped down found to be full of black silicon/ glue. Very stubborn to remove a session in ultrasonic bath loosened most it. Also noticed the washers missing on the large bevel gears. just wondering if it’s a thing to do to make diff very sticky and stiff in operation. maybe a rock crawler type mod, or just a bad idea. would like to point out not my idea. Not had the mog long it was an eBay purchase a few weeks ago as wanted some bits off it to try and make a good CC01 out of two. But as it evolves may just keep both. last pic is the result of my efforts so far.

Nice job Clive on the diff. The silicone and or glue are used to lock the diff. No interest on a cc01 wich is only a cross country rc. I love this chassis wich has no abilities on road or off road. It's the suv by tamiya. It's fun to drive on grass, forest and slowly (scale method) onroad. You can find the low ride kit option and in the kit you have 2 spares wich are here to lock the rear diff. I think that the basic silvercan motor is enough to have fun . Mine has a lot of hopups but only because I had the oportunity to buy them for a very cheap price.

Lock front and rear diff is very common on CC01 as they are useless off road with open diffs.
For LSD type diff you could cut regular rubber band in 2-3mm lengt and cram in as much as possible. I tend to hot glue my diffs as it can be removed at later date. From factory there is bits to lock one diff in the kit (infill plates for gears G5).

Thanks for the info, I have read somewhere you can put an extra gear in to lock it?
They could be the infil parts you mention. As I have not driven either one with standard diffs will try that first just so I can get a good base to then try the hot glue method or something similar, very keen on being able to remove any mods easily. |

These parts are (in the first release) to lock the rear diff. And were in white nylon on the first release.

I never used the diff locking parts on my wrangler/pajero. No interest with the on road wrangler tires. Maybe usable with the pajero tires. And with the low ride kit, they are tgx tires .... only for onroad runs.

The CC-01 was never intended to be a rock crawler. The gearing is way too high and with the original MSC there is no low speed control at all so it is not usable off road. However, with a modern ESC and a high turn brushless motor, it actually makes a pretty competent trail truck. I lock the rear diff on all my CC-01's and often the front as well.

Thanks for the information, I do realise that the cc01 is not a rock crawler out of the box and many people have modified it, that’s great. My choice is to restore build back to standard and work from there.
Most of my collection are pre owned so stripping down and cleaning/ repairing is a great stress relief for me. The main issue is controlling my impulse to buy another. With that said I have been and bought a CR01 so that’s in the queue to be done. searching for parts and learning from more experianced people is all part of the hobby for me and why I joined here. Pics will follow at some point of the latest addition. I bought it as fascinated by the 4 wheel steering, wasn’t till it arrived I realised the one I bought does not have it. so that’s on the research list. sorry prattling on to much thanks for the help great forum. |

I owned a cr01 only to build it. Never ran it and sold it some monthes ago. After all I learned, the cr01 is one of the poorest crawler out of box. But the build is awesome. For the 4ws, you can find a modern 3 speed wich are better build. I kept my dad's one. And had the opportunity to buy 2 old ones.
