Media blasting Alloy parts 9 years 7 months ago #30759

So tonight I ran a test on the halves of an SRB gearbox  Firstly the Aluminium oxide  I used this on the case to the right and as you can see it has cleaned the case back to the raw alloy, It is a very clean look but to keep it this way you would need to clear coat. Secondly the glass media  The case to the left got this treatment and you can see it has removed the surface patina and given it a moist look but it wont remove anything else like sealer or grease. So it depends on the look your are going for to determine the type/s of media to use :)

Sooo you ask  What happens if you use glass media on a part, after first using the Aluminium oxide media  Well for me at least, perfection :y: This seems to finish the raw alloy off nicely and after a scrub you get a clean original part B)

This pic is pre scrub

Oh and it's probably important you see what I started with :y: also to know the tip on my media gun is the 6mm ceramic and I had the pressure @ 50psi :y:

When you say "glass media" do you mean glass beads or glass grit - it's kind of an important difference. And what size?

I'm using .5mm grit glass media :cheer: And my aluminium oxide is the same :y:

Thanks Andy - I think I can get reasonably close to those materials, though I might have to go a little finer to try & keep the cost down to sensible levels...

I'm impressed by the final result, it's the closest to factory finish I've seen so far - though it does look a little strangely brown - what colour was the glass grit? Recycled glass with a lot of brown in it?

& what was the final scrub? Just water & somebody elses toothbrush? ;)

I'm a little disappointed there's no "magic" one media/pressure/nozzle size solution (so far), but changing the grit isn't that much hardship I guess - it's probably good practice to bag it up if it's not going to be used for a while anyway. I probably also need to do something to mouse proof the gauntlets too, come to think of it

I think you should write up your process for Lars to put on the front page :y:

My media is just a little dirty and the lighting in the pic's made it look worse

With different lighting and compared to a freshly blasted half it looks great :y:
