Twin Egress restoration 8 years 3 weeks ago #37718

I got a bit more done on the Egress' yesterday.
It's now the front gear boxes in making.

On one of the Egress' i took apart, three of the four "pins" in the bulkhead (B6) had seized inside the gear box sides (A1/A2). Luckily I had a new bulk head, and removing the stuck bits from the sides was not difficult.

Here they are, two left-side gearbox halves ready to be joined to the bulkhead and some bearings. Genuine Tamiya bearings to chassis no. 1, normal sealed bearings for chassis no.2.

Then the input shaft and input gear is added before adding the right side of the gearbox and the bumper bracket (B5)

The we add the already made diffs and intermediate gears to the gearbox, both with full bearings of course.

Finally the fwd suspension mounts and the gear box cover is added.
One point to notice are the SC1 brass fittings securing the N1/N7 suspension mounts, they are a very tight fit, probably to make sure there is as little slack in the suspension as possible.

And that is as far as I got before I had to start renovating the kitchen...

A bit more was done yesterday with the two Egress' :

First, the front gear boxes were fully assembled. You have to be really careful not over-tightening the countersunk screws, you risk cracking the very thin plastic edges. Mine survived though  :y:

Then the front gearboxes were mounted to the chassis plate. Agian countersunk screws, but the GRP is in no danger of cracking.

Next again is the rear sway bar. A lot of small components, some where treated with steel-wool to clean them up a bit further.
Parts for both models ready:

And assembled:

Mounting of the rear sway bar and the rear bracket for the shock tower, onto the upper GRP chassis deck.

A milestone, mating the upper and lower decks ;)

That was all I managed yesterday, let's hope I get more done this weekend. :y:

Going ahead slowly, but steady...
I'm now at step 13/14 in the manual, the rear suspension.

The best chassis receives new K1/K2 plastics, and the other chassis use the best of the used I have.
Changing over the steel balls was tough, but ended okay.

These are the parts for the left hand side of the best chassis:

And here are both sides assembled:

And both chassis' done:

Step 15, Rear axles:
The rear uprights have a neat design in my opinion. I have noticed that the re-re Avante use the same design, but have some added strength at places.

Again, the bes chassis receives new plastic parts, the other chassis gets the best of the rest.

All the parts for one side

All parts for all four sides

All four sides done

Step 16, mounting the rear axles.

The upper arms with blue 6mm ball heads are a nice feature of the Egress. Kind of stands out a bit.

Ready for assembly:
