That's going to be hard to fit steering rods etc yes.
You can either make or buy wheels that seems smaller then they are. I know there is 1.9 drifting wheels with a black ring which will look like it has bigger rubber than it has. Problem is finding a wheel pattern that looks good on that classic BMW.

Rear fav or brat rims shortened like Jonny does and tires could be nice and spokes design could be period ok

Wheels are always a problem when you can't find proper clearance and associated tires.
Suggestion ; printed rims (PLA or whatever) and printed tires (TPU) I buy kits to built and ru(i)n them

What wheel hexes are you using?
There is 4mm thick wheelhexes out there which will sink the wheels into the wheel arches.. Which style of wheels are you prefering? I know there is wheels out there with the pin slot built right into the wheels so there is no need for wheelhexes. But the style they come in is very limited.

These rims look period style and like BMW ones. Paint them in metal grey like steel rims and your 3.0 will be perfect.

perfect would be bbs style. i use the narrow hexes that came with the kit, i think its 4-5mm.
