Re: How do you pronounce Tamiya? 11 years 9 months ago #10814

Your movie poster made me watch Akira again... the non-dubbed pronunciation there is definitely Akira. :pinch:...

As opposed to "a-KEER-ra"? Which is as it was in the English dubbed version I had ...

I don't know who the voice artists were, but the I'm sure Kaneda (kah-neh-dah, or "kan-NAY-da" in "English" ) shared a voice with a certain Italian-American "hero in a half shell" ...

Seriously, expecting him to shout "HEY, YOU TOITLES!" at some point was quite distracting :pinch:

As opposed to "a-KEER-ra"?

Indeed... but notice how the last "Akira" in this clip is more or less stressless. :)

hero in a half shell

Haha, I reckon something like that would happen a lot in countries where everything is dubbed.
Here they usually use subtitles...

Did we reach any sort of consensus?

I think the only correct way to pronounce Tamiya is to do it as the Japanese do. And, by watching a few of Tamiya Inc's own videos, they as it as "Ta-mi-ya", with no stress on any of the parts.
Example here: at 36,5 sec (listen carefully...)

Tamiya USA, however consistently says Ta-mii-ya, which I suppose we can say is the "official" American pronunciation.
Example here:
