Tamiya Screw pins 2 years 11 months ago #66282

Hello everyone. Is there a generic version of these screw pins?  I can't find any apart from Tamiya and they are stupid expensive for what they are,

I need quite a few for the Lunchy and Hornet builds and I would also like to use them on other custom builds I plan to do,  so I would like them in different sizes too.

Any info welcome.

Lee

Until now i haven't see any generic of those Tamiya screws. I honestly didn't look for it either because I never needed it

Sorry can't help you any further with this.

Again, can't help but they probably do exist, it's "just" a matter the correct generic nomenclature. It's like a secret code for an exclusive club  like you can only find the correct size well nuts for vintage SRB radio boxes if you know they are called "Rubnuts", or the specific sort of servo joint that looked like a clevis to me, but is "correctly" a "swingkeeper", or that Anderson Power Pole connectors are known as "Torberrys" after the UK importer

Thanks everyone for the replies. Yeh They have to have a name and be available somewhere.  I hope its not just RC as they cost so much. I have found threaded roll pins but getting small amounts is not easy. i think i will  just have to order tamiya or rc ones.

There is few occurrences I search for screws of different types. I never came across such screws but in RC cars. Never saw those on any specialized site for screws.
I agree ultimately with Jonny that it could be a question of nomenclature, but I've quickly got thru some sites specialized in screws (non r/c) and never saw any screw of this kind. It may be specifically design for R/C usage.

That being said, I saw some of those in the Traxxas suspension of my son (I didn't check mine, it's not broken yet :-))

As well search for screw pin in bing search (maybe the same with Google search) provide some proper bing image result that could route you to what you are searching for (likely under other R/C brand)...

Good luck in your search, Lee!
I buy kits to built and ru(i)n them :-)

Traxxas screwpins are usually o.124" or 3.1496mm in old money, and will not fit Tamiya arms unless you drill out the arms with a 3.2mm drillbit.
If you look in my TL01 Escort build you can see I have just done that.
Traxas has both Phillips head type and allen hex head type, I choosed to use the latter one.

Tamiya calls them screwpins, but most other manufactures are calling them hinge pins.
But that said, Lunsford delivers hinge pins in titanium which is much stronger than steel.
They have them both in metric, standard (inch), and for Traxxas vehicles.
Rustler etc uses those 3.15mm ones.

Tamiya uses 3mm hinge pins.
Here is Lunsford hinge pins in 3mm, choose the length needed-measurement is from groove to groove. lunsfordracing....ip-grooves

Well, I clearly prefer those hinge pins that you linked: e-clips, no screw, no thread, no side impact on the reliability of the wishbones... And would definitely prefer kits without taping screws: sometimes the abs or plastic is not fully consistant, and you find yourself screwing in an empty moving thread, even on a brand new kit (one of the front screws of the DT03 chassis was that way. I never sens it was done. I was screwing like it would be in butter - The chassis broke at that place few weeks later, the replacement was not in this case).

I don't like tapping screws !!!
The Hunter chassis is also full of those in 4 and 3 diameters... considering replacing those by inserts (inserted hot in the chassis) and M3 hex driven screws.
I buy kits to built and ru(i)n them :-)

It may be that Tamiya starts with fully threaded screws and just turns the ends down.  I've never seen this type of screw anywhere else either.

These brands uses screw pins that actually screws into the suspension arm:
Traxxas. Bandit, Rustler, Slash family, standard ones have Phillips head, hex head on the option parrts, 3.15mm shaft diameter.
Haiboxing aka HBX. On their TL01 copy variants.
HPI. Jumpshot, RS4 among others. Those use M4 threads I think. Sprint 2 uses coarse threads.
Arrma. Uses mostly fine thread and hex head.
Kyosho. Have used screw pins in small number of their models.I found 97039-42 which is 3x42 one.

I guess there will be quite a few models running with screw pins if you look hard enough.
But of standard looking ones like Tamiya, there is only HBX and Arrma.

But for the most part, Tamiya do make e-clip hinge pins to replace the standard screw pins.
Either search for chassis code or by length. Tamiya uses 3mm hinge pins.
