Vintage Tamiya Polycarbonate Bodies question? 11 years 6 months ago #14874

Do they come with the protective outer film?
old (without?)

new (with)

I am asking this because I thought the plastic protection on my NSX body appeard to have been removed, but now I am not sure if it was ever on it.

if the later is the case it was nearly mint except for the wheelarches.

Can't say I've done a study of the subject & I'm not aware of any canonical lists - but AFAIK, in general vintage bodies didn't have a protective film, newer bodies & re-res do :)

I think the foil was probably never on it...
Neither my Dirt Trasher nor Blazing Star shell had any. I'll have to check the C11.
I've never actually had a specimen that came from an "official" body set though.

Thanks guys, had a look at the shop of vintage tamiya parts, they list a load of bodykits.
And it seems that the older ones do not have protective film, some appear to have a sticker on the top to prevent rubbing the roof against the box. So that makes my NSX near original, nice.

My opinion is that early bodysets had no protective film. My Boomer and Bigwig bodysets for sure don't have em. Must check my Terra Conqueror one if that one has any on. The rest i already used for resto's i can't remember if they had some protec film on.

The older lexan shells did not have protective film on.
From memory, the 58088 C11 does not have protective film, neither the NSX.

When you mention the Saint Dragon I remember that it did have protective film! I remember pulling the film of those excess curves ;)

As with most things with Tamiya, we will probably not be able to find a clean cut between protective film or not. I guess they used available stock for as long as they could, phasing in new materials along the way.
