Re: Michelin Pilot Escort 12 years 9 months ago #1866

Order has been placed for a bearing set, Skyline speed tuned gear and GPM motor mount :)

That's some sweet upgrades! :cheer:

I replaced the original mechanical speed controller with an LRP Runner

I'm running my cars with Lrp electronics too - ESC as well as motors. :)
I have the 13+ turns "AI Digital Reverse" and both the 23T and 17T challenge motors. Great stuff.
A nice 23 turns motor will make a huge difference in speed already compared to the silver can...
Tamiya Sport Tuned or RZ/TZ wouldn't be a bad choice either of course. B)

Hi Edou,

What is the benefit having a motor with more turns, does it provide more power?

I guess it will drain the battery a lot quicker if it does?

Also, I presume brushless is the better option?

(silver can = kit motor ?)

Hi,

More turns equals more torque and less turns more top speed.
This is all about the revs a motor can make. Less turns = more rpm.
You'd want a 55T (brushed) motor for rock crawling for example and a low turns (3-5T) brushless for a speed monster. :woohoo:
A motor with a lower number of turns will drain more power but a good battery will still allow you 20-30 minutes driving time.

For the Escort (being a rally car) a 23 turns (brushed) motor or something in that range would suit very well.
This has both instant power accessible and a nice top speed.
Probably a TA02 could handle a 9-13T brushless alright but I don't really recommend it.
Not having a slipper clutch, chances are it will be too much for the car at some point...
A brushed set up is more solid in general in my opinion. But I'm probably a bit old school with this. ;)

Btw - the silver can is the standard 27 turns "silver" Mabuchi that comes with many cars - as with your 58125.
Sport Tuned is a 23T and is also called a black can.

I think you'll be surprised how much difference the speed gears, ball bearings and a 23T motor will make...

Hope I explained it all okay...

Edit : a bigger pinion on the motor axle (24 or 25 teeth) will also give another boost in top speed :

Speed tuned pinions 50477

That's also a way to play with torque vs speed. :cheer:

Sorry I was editing the text a bit in the meantime btw - have to check stuff now and then too.

Hi Edou,

Just been reading the specs on my LRP Runner ESC, it can handle 18-36 turn motors.

Looks like one of these will sit very nicely on my chassis :)

I have an Ansmann Clash 23 in my Grasshopper. Have to say that runs very nicely.

Normally the "rule" would be to stay a few turns away from the minimum number of turns that the ESC indicates.
But it being an Lrp and this motor not being tuned to the max, I think it will work without problems.
I will check the specs on the Lrp Runner too but it probably has a thermal shut off for safety.

The car will run like the wind with this I'm sure... B)

I have a Grasshopper too, but am not going to start a rebuild on that until the escort is back up to speed!

Thanks for all of your help :)

You're welcome of course. Good luck getting the car back on the road - where it belongs... :cheer: :)

Btw - I have some good tips and tricks for the Hopper too when you come to it :

Are those Pajero tires Edou? Resized on the narrow rim?

No, they're a basic upgrade for Tamiya by Carson. This set came preglued...
I was able to fit these with the 12mm hex adapters that Tamiya makes :

Lots of fun to bash the Hopper around with! :woohoo:

Hectic, looks just like these:

And then you cut them to the size you want. I did this to Proline 1.9 Flat Irons
