Land Rover D90 on TLT axles long term project. 11 years 9 months ago #10937

So I am the proud owner of this RC4WD Land Rover D90 Body, and TLT axles, courtesy of a mate of mine. I've always wanted one of these, so this is in my books, the ultimate RC build. I will be taking my time with this one, It won't be over in a month or two. But I'll try and post all the steps I take to complete this masterpiece.

The build will consist of:

TLT axles (locked)
Custom made rail chassis
TLT shocks
brushless motor and ESC
gear reduction unit
home made FWD/AWD/RWD selectable transfer case
And the rest will follow along with the build.

So, on to the pictures...

All the body parts:

The first problem i noticed is all the parts were chrome plated, and it looks a bit bling for my liking, so I decided to strip the chrome plating off, and get it ready for priming and painting.

Part on the left is "de-chromed", part on the right is chromed:

And here is the poison for de-chroming plastic parts:

And the results:

And a quick mock-up of the complete body:

And the TLT axles:

More to follow soon, thanks for looking...

A little update...

I'm going to pick up my chassis plates from the engineer now, so this weekend I'll be able to assemble the chassis, and hopefully fit the axles too the chassis. If by the end of the weekend, the chassis is on the axles, and the shocks are installed, then I'll be happy.

I've emailed the CAD drawings to the engineer for the transmission for lazer cutting. Basically, the motor (100 turn) runs a 25 tooth pinion, which runs a 28 tooth idler gear, which runs a 25 tooth output shaft. No real point to this gearbox, because I didn't want to slow this thing down anymore (100 turn only revs to about 8000 rpm) I just wanted a 5mm output shaft for the driveshaft to connect to.

I'll post pictures tomorrow of the chassis I designed...

This one's gonna be right up my street!
V interested to see what the FWD/AWD/RWD 'box is gonna be like!
Saw the Defender body on RC4WD's site & fell about at the price tag, good looking & highly detailed body though.
Brake fluid will have the chrome off most 'chromed' plastic parts - it releases the special primer & the chrome comes off with it (The proper metal plating as well as the pretend stuff as used on the Bullhead etc)

Ok, so I got the chassis plates from the engineer, and like always, I got carried away with building, and forgot to take pictures of the build process.

But here are the results of a evening well spent.

The chassis is complete, minus a few small adjustments. But the ride height is wrong, that I'll change once I have the proper rims and tires for this build.

The front gearbox should arrive in this week sometime, and the transfer case I must still finish in CAD, and send to the engineers...

More soon...

Finally I got my front gearbox parts from the engineer.

All I had to do was clean up the parts edges a bit, and assemble to gearbox.

Here is the first bearing to carry the main output shaft.

And here is the output shaft and idler gear, with the first of the casings.

Last casing

And outer casing. The engineer didn't make the last part, which carried the 10 x 5 bearing, but that's nothing some 2 part epoxy can't fix...

And here it's mated up with the 100 turn motor

And here it's installed in the chassis

Next will be the transfer case... Stay tuned...

Nice work :y:

... but will the bond between the epoxy & the aluminium will be strong enough? I can imagine a lot of torque getting applied to that gear & the joint going "ping" :pinch:

I hear you, it most probably will, but I'll have the last piece made with my next order. I have to send the engineer the transfer box CAD files, then I'll include the last part (the bearing carrier)
